This police procedural, winner of the 2002 Glass Key Award for Best Nordic Crime Novel, marks the American debut of Inspector Erlendur Sveinsson, a police detective in Reykjavik, Iceland. After someone beats an elderly man to death with a glass ashtray, Erlendur Sveinsson learns that the deceased was accused, but not convicted, of rape many years ago, and might be implicated in other such crimes. Was the murderer seeking a long-delayed revenge? Meanwhile, Erlendur also searches for a missing bride, and attempts to improve his relationship with his pregnant, heroin-addicted daughter.
